If you like non-stop action and astronomical special effects then ‘The Mummy Returns’ is worth watching. Wrestling fans will be contented to gape ‘The Rock’ cast as the Scorpion King. Female fans of Oded Fehr, the Israeli actor, will be jubilant to glimpse him cast again as the dashing Egyptian horseman and fighter Ardeth Bay.

Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) and Evie (Rachel Weisz) are married in this sequel and have a young son who does a honorable job of keeping the villains on their toes. Evie is supposed to be a reincarnation of Nefertiti, the Pharaoh’s daughter. Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), the Pharaoh’s high priest, and Anck-Su-Namun (Patricia Velazquez), the priest’s paramour, are brought wait on to life to fight the Scorpion King and engage control of the army of Anoubis, the dismal god of the underworld.

Some movie buffs have expressed reservations about the historical inaccuracies in both ‘The Mummy’ and ‘The Mummy Returns’. However, these inaccuracies are not offensive to Egyptian Culture. This movie is merely a work of fiction. Some scenes and dialogs may seem to be cliched. Several scenes are a rehash of ‘The Mummy’. The characters in the movie jokingly admit to the ’same extinct demolish of the world’ place.

Even with all its cliches, this movie is worth watching.

Anyone looking for a “gigantic” movie will probably be disappointed, but anyone looking for sheer fun will probably be more than gratified. Director Steven Sommers took his toothsome 1999 movie “The Mummy” and expanded it out to an record scale. The action picks up 10 years after the original; tomb raiders Evelyn and Rick O’Connell (now married, with 8-year-old child Alex in tow) glance another Egyptian artifact (the bracelet of the legendary Scorpion King) that unleashes yet another wretchedness to the world, and once again, Evie and Rick have to halt it.

A contingent of terrible guys, however, want in on the action, and they raise Imhotep (the mummy from the first movie) because he’s the only one strong enough to occupy on the Scorpion King. The unpleasant guys are led by a woman named Meela, who claims to be the reincarnation of Anck-Su-Namun, Imhotep’s long-lost forbidden adore.

Sommers cleverly adds an expanded backstory to the main characters from the earlier film, and while some of it stretches the imagination– it seems like every character is a reincarnation of someone else– it’s executed in a mostly fun and believable draw. In particular, the development of an traditional rivalry between Evelyn and Meela is fabulously well-done, adding great dimension to the reasons for Imhotep’s depraved punishment in the first film. Arnold Vosloo was spacious in “The Mummy,” but now, teamed up with his long-lost esteem, he’s a thousand times more fun– creepier, smarter, and yet at times endearingly vulnerable.

Mystical warrior Ardath Bay (the very hot Oded Fehr) also has an expanded role in this film, and helps ground viewers when they are faced with things like multiple reincarnations and hoardes of screaming pygmy mummies. Fehr brings exactly the lawful touches of appeal, swashbuckling wobble, and “exotic” Middle Eastern mystery to the role.

A surprising amount of care seems to have been given to the supporting characters; they have fair enough depth but not too much: Evie’s brother Jonathan is aid, providing mighty of the funny relief (but he also has some astounding moments of heroism) ; tiny Alex is fun and resourceful without being overly precocious. Special care seems to have been taken with the villains: they are by turns menacing, comical, and *smart*, often a rare thing in the action/ adventure genre. In particular, Bay’s rival Lock Nah is well-written and well-acted.

The script isn’t exactly Shakespeare, but it’s snappy, amusing, and (mostly) makes sense. The action sequences are spectacularly well-choreographed, and of course, the special effects are impressive. Sommers also allows some improbable moments of human emotion: the sexual chemistry between Evie and Rick (ditto Meela and Imhotep) ; Jonathan’s anguish for his sister and nephew; Evie and Rick’s fancy for their son; Bay’s distress for his friends (and his vast affection for his astonishing hawk) . These slight touches manufacture the dissimilarity between a mindless action flick, and something that really stays with you after the credits roll.

Oddly enough, the much-touted presence of WWF star “The Rock” as the Scorpion King turns out to be almost negligible: it’s a cameo that mostly sets up his enjoy memoir “The Scorpion King,” due out in 2002. The right heart of this movie are the Evelyn-Rick and Imhotep- Anck-Su-Namun appreciate stories. Without these and the other large characters from “Mummy Returns,” it’s hard to imagine that the next movie in this franchise could possibly top this one.

So if you’re looking for something immense, rent “Lawrence of Arabia.” If you’re looking for a highly palatable popcorn flick, “The Mummy Returns,” should fit the bill perfectly.

Jean-Claude Van Damme’s martial arts extravaganza is bolstered by some fair editing, a sunless, scary soundtrack, and some great fair camera work. Despite some B-level acting (except for Robert Guillaume as a supply doling inmate) director, Deran Sarafian, keeps the whole affair rolling along well enough to provide some key suspenseful moments. The area involves police investigator, Louis Burke (Van Damme), who becomes a mole in prison while investigating a deadly crime ring while the elusive “Sandman” lurks in the background with nine-lives more reminiscent of Michael Myers than a spruce criminal. Although this element breaks up the film’s credibility somewhat, it ups the tension as well. In the demolish ‘Death Warrant’ is a involving hour and a half movie that has enough going for it to build you forget its weaknesses.

A J.P.’s Hold 3’s = Good

The Jean Claude Van Damme Review Matrix (JCVD-RM)

1. Who is he? He’s Detective Louis Burke, who goes undercover as a prisoner in a penitentiary with a lot of unexplained deaths.

2. Which family member/friend must be avenged? His partner was murdered by a maniac named Sandman.

3. Does he win his shirt off? Not only does the Sandman homoerotically grasp Louis’ shirt in the shower, but in the climactic final battle, Louis is pressed up against an iron furnace door. Naturally, this singes the shirt to smithereens, and Sandman obedient removes the rest. Sandman has clearly been in prison too long.

4. Does he have sex with a C-List actress? Unless there was a deleted scene with his cellmate, I don’t judge so.

5. Is there a tournament? As far as I’m concerned, being in general pop. at a penitentiary IS a tournament.

6. Is training needed for this tournament? The only training needed was in regards to a firm grip on the soap when showering.

7. Does he do the splits in training or in the tournament? Only in the shower room.

8. Does he punch someone in the balls? No. I don’t mediate he wants to insinuate anything to the larger prisoners.

9. Does he do a series of flying or 360 kicks? There are approximately 78 traipse kicks in this movie; Louis only receives about 3 of them.

10. Is his enemy unbeatable? He may be the most unstoppable force JCVD has ever met. Let’s establish it this way: Louis shoots the Sandman five times early in the movie, and the Sandman survives. Later, the Sandman gets kicked into a 1500 degree Celsius blast furnace, gets out, does a tiny stop-drop-and-roll, and is ready to fight some more.

11. Does he overcome an injury or other hindrance? Early in his fight with Sandman, Louis gets hit in the face with a two foot wrench. So, I guess that counts.

12. Does he get? After impaling the Sandman on a trail sticking out of some piping, and getting taunted, Louis calmly walks over scrambles the Sandman’s brains - fair record the process by which McFlurries are made at McDonald’s and you have a superior belief.

With grunting and mono-syllabic lines galore, the factual genius of everyone’s approved Belgian homunculus is in plump force with Death Warrant. Not only that, but the sound effects are incredibly trumped up for this one, with every kick and punch accompanying a swoosh through the air and finishing with a thud into raw meat. The “organ harvesting with the attend of noxious police”-angle is also an oddly engrossing one for a JCVD movie. Overall, this isn’t the best of his oeuvre, but it’s got a few hardcore battles that will have you air-punching to obtain in on the action. This is solid JCVD gold.
